About us
Goal
Our mission in the education of microbiology and immunology for the undergraduate and graduate students in the medical college is to emphasize the basics in the medical microbiology and immunology. Knowledges of microbiology are closely related to our daily life as well as the medical care systems. The goal of our Department is to educate students with various basic knowledge of microbiology, including phylogeny, characteristics, pathogenicity, clinical diagnosis and industrial applications, etc. Faculties in our department are responsible for all microbiology teaching and research work in the school; these include undergraduate students from Department of Medicine, Medical Technology, Chinese Medicine, Nursing, Biomedical sciences, and graduate students from Biomedical Sciences.
History
When Chang Gung University was first founded in 1987, Dr. Y.-S. Chang started her laboratory at one corner of Chang Gung Memorial Hospital. In 1989, the Department of Microbiology and Immunology moved to the 7th floor of the First Medical Building of Chang Gung University, and Dr. Chang was the first chairperson. In the following few years, Drs. J. Ou, L. Wei, H.-L. Peng, S.-T. Liu, K.-P. Chow, and J. H. Wu, joined the department. The early microbiology laboratory course for the undergraduates was designed by Ms. P.-F. Lee, and part of the materials are still used in the laboratory course today. Around 1993, Dr. Wei left Chang Gung University for a position in University of Minnesota (USA). Dr. Peng joined Chiao Tung University in 1998. The teaching duties later expanded to include clinical medicine and several faculties with different research specialty joined the department, including Dr. S.-Y. Hsieh (1991), Dr. M. Chao (1999), and Dr. M.-L. Kuo (2002). Dr. J. Ou was retired in 2004 and served as an emeritus professor in the department. Dr. Ou passed away in June 2005. In 2004-2005, the department recruited a bacteriologist, Dr. Y. M. Chen, and an Immunologist, Dr. H.-H. Lin, from overseas. Dr. H.-P. Li, a virologist, joined the Department in 2008.
Specialty
The Department of Microbiology and Immunology at Chang Gung University is responsible for all undergraduate and graduate courses in the areas of microbiology and immunology. The scope of research pursed in our department covers bacterial physiology and pathogenesis; tumorgenesis of EBV in nasopharyngeal carcinoma; molecular biology of hepatitis virus, EBV immunology, allergic immunology and molecular mechanism involved in macrophage immunology. To achieve excellence in research, joint project and collaboration between the faculties and clinicians in Chang Gung have been well established.
